What compressing a WebP actually does
WebP compression works like JPEG’s: the image is decoded and re-encoded at the quality you choose, discarding fine detail to save space. Because WebP is already an efficient format, a file that came out of a modern website may have little room left. Where this really pays off is with WebP files exported at maximum quality by a design tool, which are often several times larger than they need to be. As with JPG, avoid re-compressing the same file again and again.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and the Canvas API. Your images are never sent over the network, never touch a server, and are dropped from memory as soon as you close the tab.
How much smaller will the file get?
It depends entirely on the original. A photo straight from a camera often loses half its weight at 85% quality with no visible difference. An image that was already compressed hard has little left to give, and may barely shrink at all.
Does compressing lose quality?
Yes — WebP is a lossy format, so re-encoding discards some detail. At 85% that is invisible on screen for most images. What you should avoid is compressing the same file over and over, because the loss stacks up each time.
Is there a limit or a cost?
It is free and there is no account. The only limits are practical: 30 files at a time and 60 MB per file, so that the tab does not run out of memory on a phone.
Can I convert several files at once?
