About the formats

HEIC — High Efficiency Image Container

HEIC is what an iPhone produces by default from iOS 11 onwards. It wraps HEVC-compressed image data in a container that can also carry depth maps, Live Photo frames and edit history. At comparable quality it lands at roughly half the size of a JPEG, which is excellent right up until you try to open it on Windows, on Android, or in an upload form that has never heard of it.

WebP

WebP is Google's attempt to replace both JPEG and PNG with a single format. It handles lossy and lossless, keeps transparency and animation, and typically comes in 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPEG. Every browser released in the past several years supports it, which is why so much of the web now serves it.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and the Canvas API. Your images are never sent over the network, never touch a server, and are dropped from memory as soon as you close the tab.

Will I lose quality?

WebP is a lossy format, so some data is discarded. At the default quality of 85% the difference is invisible on screen for most photos. Raise the slider if you plan to print or edit the result.

Is there a limit or a cost?

It is free and there is no account. The only limits are practical: 30 files at a time and 60 MB per file, so that the tab does not run out of memory on a phone.

Can I convert several files at once?

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, yes. The converter itself needs no network connection, so you can drop the connection and keep converting.
